Project Casa Maio
Architect: Marzia Fiume Garelli – FiumeArchitecture
Photography: Francesco Catino – Catino Foto
Location: Via Chisimaio
2021 – 63 sqm
Located on the penultimate floor of a historic building, Casa Maio is a masterclass in spatial optimization. In just 62 square meters, the renovation has transformed a compact layout into a sophisticated, multi-functional home without sacrificing its soulful heritage.
The "Cementine" Game: Art Underfoot
The project centers around the recovery of the original "cementine" tiles. Rather than a simple restoration, we created a geometric "game" where these vintage tiles act as decorative "carpets" set within contemporary flooring. This visual play defines the different functional areas while honoring the craftsmanship of the past.
Materiality: Exposed Masonry
To add depth and a sense of "urban warmth," the original masonry was stripped back and left exposed. This raw, textured backdrop contrasts beautifully with the clean lines of the new intervention, creating a dialogue between the building's structural history and modern living.
Smart Layout: 2 Bedrooms & 2 Bathrooms
The challenge of the 62sqm footprint was met with an ambitious architectural reorganization:
-
Dual Exposure: Being on a high floor, the light is maximized throughout the new layout.
-
The Sleeping Quarters: We successfully integrated two distinct bedrooms, optimized for comfort and storage.
-
Double Facilities: Despite the compact size, the home now features two full bathrooms, significantly increasing the property's value and daily livability.
Casa Maio proves that "small" can be "grand" when historical character meets smart, contemporary design
