Project in Montemerano, Tuscany
Architect: Marzia Fiume Garelli – FiumeArchitecture
Photography: Francesco Marano – Eller StudioProject
Location: Vicolo delle scuole, Montemerano
2019 – 20sqm
Located in the heart of the medieval village of Montemerano, Tuscany, this project involved the transformation of a 20-sqm former wine cellar into a smart, cozy studio apartment. The renovation celebrates Tuscan heritage through the lens of modern technical innovation.
Technical Mastery: Elevation and Moisture Protection
The primary challenge was ensuring a healthy living environment within the original stone structure. We implemented a floor elevation to integrate an advanced anti-humidity system, a crucial step in converting the historic cellar into a comfortable, dry, and perfectly livable space.
Sustainability & Local Heritage
Our design philosophy focused on the reuse of local materials. By incorporating regional stone and restoring original features, such as the windows, we maintained a deep connection to the territory while modernizing the overall aesthetic with a sustainable approach.
Smart Living Solutions
Every inch of the layout was optimized for maximum functionality to create a high-quality "monolocale":
-
The Kitchenette: A high-performance, compact cooking area that blends seamlessly with the living zone.
-
Sleep & Storage: A comfortable sofa bed paired with a spacious bespoke wardrobe, ensuring the studio feels organized and uncluttered.
-
Essential Spaces: The clever addition of a modern bathroom and a dedicated storage closet provides all the amenities of a full-sized home within a minimal footprint.
La Cantina is where historical charm meets the fluidity of modern Mediterranean living, proving that great design doesn't require large square footage.
